Literature Search Dates

Targeted literature searches are conducted using chemical names, synonyms, and CASRNs in multiple search engines (e.g., Web of Science, Agricola, ToxNet, ProQuest, etc). Chemicals listed below had targeted searches corresponding to the date indicated in the fourth column. Each search is identified in the table by the requested chemical or chemical group, with some searches including multiple chemicals/CASRNs.

Citations from these searches will undergo data abstraction if the studies meet the inclusionary criteria for ECOTOX. Toxicity data results may take 6 months or longer to appear on-line. There may be more recent publications in ECOTOX for a chemical due to related chemical literature searches.

New Additions!

In addition to chemical data updates, ECOTOX has added new features based on user feedback:

  1. DOI (Digital Object Identifier) has been added to citations in ECOTOX (when possible). This unique identifier helps users easily find the full publications and will allow better interoperability with bibliographic databases and applications. This new DOI field is now included in the reference citation displayed on the tables in Search and Explore as well as in the downloaded files.
  2. The NEW Explore Publications module provides options to query by citation information (author, title, ECOREF Number, DOI) and display toxicity data by reference. This new explore module follows the general structure and options within the other Explore modules (for Chemicals, Species, and Effects), but also has some functionality that differs (such as, how the records are displayed) - these are being piloted in Explore Publications and may be incorporated into the Chemical, Species, and Effects Explore modules in the future. We welcome feedback and ideas! Please send comments through the Contact Us page.
The query steps and options for this new explore module are:
    • Initial query page:
      • Provides options on the left-hand side to browse by citation information (author, title, ECOREF Number, DOI) OR enter the specific ECOREF Number(s) for publication(s) of interest.
      • In addition, the query options on the right-hand side allow users to identify publications based on chemical(s), species, and/or effects.
      • Entering and/or selecting options will automatically update the # of Publications meeting your query parameters (see top right-hand corner).
    • Click 'Explore Data' to see results for the set of publications matching your query parameters. This will open the standard Explore page, with 'Summary', 'Records', and 'Plot View' tabs.
      • Chemical, Species, and Effect selections from the landing page will automatically be added to the Query Filters in the left-hand panel. These can be removed or more filters can be added, as needed.
      • A subset of publications can be selected using the Reference filter. The Reset All (red button) on the bottom of the left-hand panel will return you to only the original list of publications (with all other query filters removed).
    • Expanded Summary tab to include the number of chemicals, number of species, number tests (unique experiments), and number of records in ECOTOX for each publication.
    • Expanded Results tab to include the test ID, duration, and concentration associated with each effect and endpoint.
    • New options in Plot View with the same functionality as other Explore modules, with new options to display data records by Publication or Test # (on the x-axis or for the legend category).
    • Send Query Filters to Search sends Ref Number(s) [ECOREF #], along with the other selected values from the Query Filters in the left sidebar, to begin a Search. The selected values will pre-populate the corresponding parameters on the Search page.

Using Duration Filter in SEARCH

Duration was recently added as a filter parameter that you can apply in both SEARCH and EXPLORE queries to limit the results returned to a specific value or range for the Observed Duration, in days. [The Observed Duration is the time at which an effect measurement was observed/measured and reported (for example, a 24-hour LC50).]

The following is an example how you can apply the Duration filter in SEARCH.

  1. From SEARCH, expand "All Test Conditions", Test Conditions sidebar menu, on the left-hand side under "Parameters".
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the expanded "All Test Conditions" section to find the options under "Specify Duration (Observed)".
  3. Search filters to specify duration
  4. Filter results to a specific duration returned by typing the requested duration in days, as a number, in the text box under "Insert specific duration (days)". For example, if you are only interested in 24-hour LC50s, type 1 under "Insert specific duration (days)", The value one day is set in the duration filter., and then also go to the "All Endpoints", Endpoints sidebar menu, section under "Parameters" to select "LC50" Endpoint LC 50 is selected..
  5. Then select the green "Update Search" button, Update Search button, on the bottom left-hand side to apply filters and view resulting records.
  6. If you are instead interested in a range for duration, enter the minimum, maximum, or both minimum and maximum under "Enter range for duration (days)".
  7. Duration range search filter.
  8. The results table will include the records that meet the parameters you selected and/or entered within Chemical, Species, Effects, Endpoints, Test Conditions, and Publication Options windows under "Parameters" in SEARCH.
  9. You can restore the default selections across all parameters by clicking on the "Reset All" button Reset All button, or within a single window by clicking on the "Reset" button in top right of a window Reset button.
  10. In the results table, the Obs. Dur. (Days) column will reflect the Duration filter you applied. To include additional data fields such as the Author Reported Observed Duration in the displayed and exported table, select "Customize Output Fields" Customize output fields button and select from the list of available fields.
